What it means
An antifungal capsule that stops fungal cells from making the material they need to grow. It is almost never used alone, because fungi quickly become resistant to it; it is given with amphotericin B for serious infections such as cryptococcal meningitis and some Candida infections. The kidneys clear it, so kidney problems raise the blood level.
For the nurse
Watch blood counts, kidney function and liver tests: it can suppress the bone marrow and is used with great care when the kidneys are weak. Report sore throat, fever, unusual bruising or bleeding. Nausea is common; taking the capsules a few at a time over 15 minutes can help.
