What it means
Flushing happens when small blood vessels near the skin widen. It can come with fever, strong emotion, alcohol, hot flashes in menopause, and drugs such as niacin, nitrates and some IV antibiotics given too fast. It can also be part of an allergic reaction.
For the nurse
Note when it started and what came with it. Flushing with itching, hives, wheezing or swelling of the lips or face can be an allergic reaction: stop the drug or infusion and report it at once.
