Word parts

follicul/o follicle (small sac)-itis inflammation

What it means

It looks like small red bumps or white-topped pimples around hairs, often itchy or tender. Bacteria, most often Staphylococcus aureus, are the usual cause; shaving, tight clothing, sweating and poorly cleaned hot tubs make it more likely. It is usually mild, but a deeper infection can become a boil.

For the nurse

Teach warm compresses, not squeezing the bumps, using a clean razor or not shaving the area, and good hand hygiene.
