What it means
Named after George Fowler, an American surgeon. In Fowler position the head of the bed is raised 45 to 90 degrees; high Fowler is close to 90 degrees, sitting straight up; semi-Fowler is 30 to 45 degrees. Sitting up lets the lungs expand more easily and helps prevent aspiration during eating and tube feeding.
For the nurse
Use it for clients with trouble breathing and during meals and tube feedings. Bend the knees slightly so the client does not slide down, and check the sacrum and heels for pressure.
