further teaching

More instruction that a client or family member needs because what they say or do shows they have not understood.

FUR-ther TEE-ching noun

What it means

An exam phrase, as in "Which statement by the client indicates a need for further teaching?" The nurse compares what the person says or does with what was taught. A statement that is wrong or unsafe shows the teaching did not work, so the nurse teaches again. In these questions the answer to choose is the incorrect statement, not the correct one.

For the nurse

Check understanding with teach-back: ask the client to explain or show the skill in their own words, then correct and reteach any gap.
