What it means
It is usually caused by plaque building up on the teeth, and the gums become red, swollen and bleed easily. It is common in pregnancy and with some drugs, such as phenytoin. Without care it can progress to periodontitis, which damages the bone that holds the teeth.
For the nurse
Teach brushing twice a day with a soft brush, flossing and regular dental visits. Give mouth care to clients who cannot do it themselves.
