granulation tissue

New, moist, red tissue that fills a healing wound from the bottom up.

gran-yuh-LAY-shun TISH-oo noun

What it means

It is made of new connective tissue and many tiny, fragile capillaries, which give it a bumpy, beefy-red look and make it bleed easily. Healthy granulation tissue means a wound is healing. Pale or dusky tissue may mean poor blood flow.

For the nurse

Protect it: keep the wound moist, clean gently, and choose dressings that do not stick and tear the new tissue when removed.
