What it means
A structure that reaches from the skin's surface down into the dermis. At its base, living cells divide to make the hair. Each follicle has a small oil gland (sebaceous gland) and a tiny muscle that makes the hair stand up. Inflammation or infection of follicles is folliculitis; a boil is a deeper infection of one.
