What it means

Red blood cells in the urine. Gross hematuria turns urine pink, red or cola-colored; microscopic hematuria is found only on a urine test. Causes range from infection, kidney stones and injury to kidney disease and cancers of the bladder or kidney. Some foods (beets) and drugs (rifampin) color urine red without blood, and menstrual blood can get into a sample.

For the nurse

Describe the color and any clots, and report it, especially in a client on anticoagulants or after a urinary procedure. Pink-tinged urine is expected for a short time after some urologic surgery.
