Word parts
What it means
A genetic bleeding disorder. Hemophilia A is a lack of clotting factor VIII; hemophilia B is a lack of factor IX. The gene is on the X chromosome, so it mostly affects boys, and mothers can carry it without symptoms. Bleeding into joints, muscles and after injury or surgery lasts longer than normal. Treatment replaces the missing factor.
For the nurse
Apply pressure and cold to bleeding sites and raise the limb. Avoid IM injections, rectal temperatures and aspirin or NSAIDs. Teach the family to give factor replacement, to choose safe activities such as swimming, and to wear a medical alert ID.
