Word parts
What it means
A condition of pregnancy in which the vomiting is severe enough to cause dehydration, weight loss (often more than 5% of pre-pregnancy weight), ketones in the urine and electrolyte imbalances. It usually starts in the first trimester and can last much longer than ordinary morning sickness. Treatment includes IV fluids, vitamins such as thiamine, and drugs to control vomiting.
For the nurse
Weigh the client, record intake and output, check urine for ketones and watch potassium and sodium levels. Offer small, frequent, dry meals once vomiting is controlled, and give emotional support: the condition is exhausting.
