What it means
A monoclonal antibody that blocks tumor necrosis factor (TNF), a protein that drives inflammation. It is used for Crohn disease, ulcerative colitis, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis and related diseases. Because it dampens the immune system, it raises the risk of serious infections, including the return of old tuberculosis, and some cancers. Several biosimilars exist.
For the nurse
A TB test and hepatitis B check are done before starting. During the infusion, watch for reactions such as fever, chills, itching, chest tightness or low blood pressure, and slow or stop it as ordered. Teach the client to report signs of infection and to avoid live vaccines.
