influenza vaccine

A vaccine, given each year, that helps protect against the flu.

in-floo-EN-zuh vak-SEEN noun

What it means

A yearly vaccine made to match the influenza strains expected that season. In the US it is recommended for everyone 6 months and older. Most forms are shots with killed virus or a single virus protein, which cannot cause the flu. The nasal spray (FluMist) contains a weakened live virus and is only for healthy, non-pregnant people aged 2 to 49. Soreness at the site and mild aches are common.

For the nurse

Give the vaccine information statement first and ask about past reactions. People with an egg allergy can receive any flu vaccine suitable for their age. Do not give the live nasal vaccine to pregnant or immunocompromised clients.
