What it means
The inner ear has the cochlea, a snail-shaped tube that turns sound into nerve signals, and the vestibular system (the semicircular canals and nearby sacs) that senses head movement and balance. Problems here cause hearing loss, ringing in the ears (tinnitus) and a spinning feeling (vertigo). Some drugs, such as aminoglycoside antibiotics and high doses of loop diuretics, can damage it.
