What it means

The fetus is not getting enough nutrients and oxygen to grow as it should. Problems with the placenta, high blood pressure in pregnancy, smoking, infection and genetic conditions are common causes. It may be suspected when the fundal height is smaller than expected and is confirmed by ultrasound.

For the nurse

Teach the pregnant client to count fetal movements, and expect frequent monitoring such as nonstress tests and ultrasounds. After birth, the baby is checked often for low blood glucose and low temperature.
