What it means

The folded-in section blocks the bowel and can cut off its own blood supply. It happens most often in infants and young children, usually between about 3 months and 3 years. It is an emergency. Often a contrast or air enema done under imaging pushes the bowel back into place; surgery is needed if that fails.

For the nurse

Report sudden attacks of crying with the knees drawn up, vomiting, or stool mixed with blood and mucus. Before the enema, report a normal brown stool, which may mean the bowel has slipped back on its own.
