What it means
A retinoid that shrinks the skin's oil glands. It is very effective for severe nodular acne, but it causes serious birth defects if taken during pregnancy, so it is only given through the FDA's iPLEDGE program. Common effects are very dry skin, lips and eyes, nosebleeds and sun sensitivity; it can also raise blood fats and liver tests and may affect mood.
For the nurse
Clients who can become pregnant must use two forms of birth control and have negative pregnancy tests before, during and after treatment. Teach the client not to donate blood or share the drug, to use lip balm and sunscreen, and to report depression, thoughts of self-harm, severe headache or vision changes.
