What it means
In a medication order, IVP usually means IV push: a drug given by syringe directly into an IV line over a short time, rather than as a slow drip. In older imaging records it can mean intravenous pyelogram, an x-ray of the kidneys and ureters taken after IV contrast dye. A few texts use it for intimate partner violence. Because of these different meanings, many facilities ask that it be written out.
For the nurse
For an IV push, check how fast the drug may be given and whether it must be diluted, then push it over the stated time, often timed with a watch. If an order with IVP is unclear, ask the prescriber what is meant.
