lead poisoning

Harm to the body from a buildup of lead, a toxic metal, usually over months or years.

LED POY-zuh-ning noun

What it means

Young children are most at risk, because they put hands and objects in their mouths and their developing brains are easily harmed. Lead comes most often from dust and chips of old paint in homes built before 1978, and also from soil, old water pipes and some imported products. Even low levels can lower a child's ability to learn. Severe poisoning is treated with drugs that bind lead (chelation).

For the nurse

Screen with a blood lead test as recommended, often at 12 and 24 months. Teach families to wet-mop floors and windowsills, wash children's hands and toys often, and use cold tap water for cooking.
