malaise

A general feeling of being unwell, uneasy or weak, without one clear cause.

muh-LAYZ noun

What it means

The vague feeling that something is wrong in the body: tired, achy, out of sorts. It is common at the start of infections such as influenza and in many long-term illnesses. On its own it tells little, but it is part of the picture the nurse records.

For the nurse

Ask when it started and what other symptoms came with it, such as fever, cough or loss of appetite, and take vital signs.
