What it means
In infection control, a surgical mask protects against droplets and is worn for droplet precautions and sterile procedures. An N95 respirator filters tiny airborne particles and must be fit-tested; it is worn for airborne precautions, such as for tuberculosis. Oxygen masks include the simple face mask, the non-rebreather mask (which gives high oxygen) and the Venturi mask (which gives an exact amount).
For the nurse
Put a surgical mask on a client with a droplet or airborne infection when they leave the room. Make sure an oxygen mask fits well over the nose and mouth, and check the skin under the straps.
