massage

Rubbing, pressing or kneading the body's soft tissues to relax muscles, ease pain or improve blood flow.

muh-SAHZH noun

What it means

Massage is used for comfort and pain relief, for example a back rub or massage during labor. After birth, the nurse massages the top of the uterus (fundal massage) to help it tighten and slow bleeding.

For the nurse

Never massage a leg that may have a blood clot, and do not rub reddened skin over a bony area, which can deepen pressure damage.
