What it means
An operation, most often to treat or prevent breast cancer. A total (simple) mastectomy removes the whole breast; a modified radical mastectomy also removes lymph nodes under the arm; a partial mastectomy (lumpectomy) removes only the tumor and some tissue around it. The breast can be rebuilt (reconstruction) at the same time or later.
