What it means
An official, usually a physician trained in forensic pathology, who decides the cause and manner of death when it is not clearly natural, for example after an injury, a suspected crime, a death in custody or a death soon after surgery. A coroner does a similar job but is often elected and need not be a doctor. Which deaths must be reported is set by state or local law.
For the nurse
When a death must be reported to the medical examiner, leave tubes, lines and drains in place, do not clean the body, and keep clothing and belongings as agency policy directs.
