melatonin

A hormone made by the pineal gland in the brain, mostly at night, that helps control the sleep-wake cycle.

mel-uh-TOH-nin noun

What it means

Darkness signals the pineal gland to release melatonin, which helps the body feel ready to sleep; light lowers it. It is also sold as a supplement for sleep problems and jet lag. In the United States it is sold as a dietary supplement, not a drug, so dose and quality can vary between products. Daytime sleepiness and headache are common side effects.

For the nurse

Include melatonin and other supplements when you take a medication history. Teach good sleep habits as well, such as dim light and no screens before bed.
