What it means
An atypical antidepressant that raises norepinephrine and serotonin activity. Its sedation and weight gain can help a client who is depressed and not sleeping or eating. Like other antidepressants, it carries a warning about suicidal thoughts in children and young adults.
For the nurse
Give it at bedtime. Teach that it can take a few weeks to work, to avoid alcohol and to report mood changes or thoughts of self-harm. Check weight.
