Word parts
What it means
A general word for muscle weakness. It is best known from myasthenia gravis, an autoimmune disease in which antibodies block the signals from nerves to muscles, so the muscles tire quickly with use and get stronger with rest. In myasthenia gravis the eye muscles are often affected first, with drooping eyelids and double vision.
For the nurse
In a client with myasthenia gravis, check swallowing and breathing strength, plan activities for times of best strength, and give medicines on time, since a late dose can quickly lead to weakness.
