Word parts
What it means
Describes anything of the nose: the nasal passages, a nasal spray, a nasal cannula that delivers oxygen through two short prongs in the nostrils, or nasal flaring, when the nostrils widen with each breath. A medicine given "intranasal" is sprayed or dropped into the nose.
For the nurse
Nasal flaring in an infant or child means they are working hard to breathe and is reported. Check the skin over the ears and nose under a nasal cannula for pressure injury.
