What it means
Short for the Latin "nil per os." NPO is ordered before surgery and some procedures so the stomach is empty during sedation, when a client cannot swallow safely, and when the gut needs rest. How long and whether sips with drugs are allowed depend on the order and policy.
For the nurse
Post a sign, remove the water pitcher and tell the client, family and staff. Ask the provider which oral drugs, if any, to give with a sip of water. Give mouth care, and watch for low blood sugar in clients with diabetes and for dehydration.
