What it means
A somatostatin analog given SUBQ, IV or as a monthly IM depot (and an oral capsule). It treats acromegaly and the severe diarrhea and flushing of carcinoid and other hormone-making tumors, and is used IV to slow bleeding from esophageal varices. Side effects include nausea, belly cramps, gallstones and changes in blood glucose.
For the nurse
Check blood glucose, especially in clients with diabetes, and watch for signs of gallstones (upper right belly pain). Rotate SUBQ sites.
