What it means
Oral syringes are made so they cannot connect to IV lines, which prevents liquid meant for the mouth from being given into a vein by mistake. They are often colored and labeled "oral use only", and measure small doses more accurately than cups or spoons.
For the nurse
For an infant or young child, give the liquid slowly into the pocket between the cheek and gums, a little at a time, so the child can swallow without choking. Never use an IV syringe for an oral liquid.
