What it means
The skin of the ear canal becomes inflamed, usually from bacteria and sometimes from fungus, often after water stays in the ear or the canal is scratched. The ear is painful, especially when the outer ear is pulled or pressed, and may itch, drain or feel blocked. It is treated with ear drops.
For the nurse
Teach clients to keep the ear dry while it heals, dry ears after swimming, and not to put cotton swabs or other objects in the canal.
