PAPR

Powered air-purifying respirator: a respirator with a battery fan that pushes filtered air into a hood or mask.

PAY-per, or pee-ay-pee-ar abbreviation

What it means

A respirator worn for airborne precautions and other high-risk exposures. A battery-powered blower pulls room air through a filter and blows it into a hood, helmet or tight mask, so the wearer breathes clean air without effort. Many loose hoods need no fit test, so a PAPR is used by staff who cannot pass an N95 fit test, such as those with beards.

For the nurse

Check the battery charge, the filter and the airflow before entering the room. Remove and clean it in the order the agency sets out for doffing, and do not touch the front of the filter.
