patent ductus arteriosus

A heart defect in which the ductus arteriosus, a blood vessel between the aorta and pulmonary artery, stays open after birth.

PAY-tent DUK-tus ar-teer-ee-OH-sus noun

What it means

Before birth this vessel lets blood skip the lungs. It normally closes within days after birth. If it stays open (patent), extra blood flows into the lungs and the heart works harder. It is common in premature babies. It may close with drugs such as indomethacin or ibuprofen, or with a catheter procedure or surgery.

For the nurse

Watch the infant for fast breathing, poor feeding and slow weight gain, and listen for a murmur.
