What it means
Head lice (pediculosis capitis) are common in school-age children and spread by head-to-head contact and, less often, shared combs, hats and bedding. Lice lay eggs (nits) that stick firmly to hair shafts near the scalp. The main symptom is itching. Body lice and pubic lice are other forms. Lice are not a sign of poor hygiene.
For the nurse
Treat with a lice medicine as directed and comb out nits with a fine-toothed comb. Wash bedding, clothing and hats in hot water and dry on high heat, or seal items in a bag for two weeks. Check family members.
