What it means
In injury care, a penetrating wound is one where an object, such as a knife or bullet, breaks the skin and enters the body; blunt injuries do not break through. The word is also used for how deep a needle or a substance reaches, and in sexual and assault histories.
For the nurse
Never pull out an object stuck in a wound; steady it in place with bulky dressings and get help. Note the location and size of entry and any exit wounds.
