What it means
A chelating agent used for Wilson disease (copper build-up), for cystinuria (a cause of kidney stones) and, rarely now, for severe rheumatoid arthritis. It can cause serious side effects, including rash, loss of taste, protein in the urine, low blood counts and autoimmune problems.
For the nurse
Give it at least 1 hour before a meal or 2 hours after one, and apart from iron or antacids. Blood counts and urine tests are checked often. A vitamin B6 supplement is usually ordered. Teach the client to report fever, sore throat, bruising or rash.
