What it means
The region between the vaginal opening or scrotum and the anus. During a vaginal birth it can tear, or the provider may cut it (episiotomy) to widen the opening. Perineal care is the cleaning of the genital and anal area.
For the nurse
Clean from front to back (from the urethra toward the anus) to prevent infection. After birth, check the perineum for swelling, bruising and the repair, and offer ice packs in the first 24 hours, then warm sitz baths and a peri bottle.
