What it means
Light that seems too bright or that hurts. Despite the name, it is not a fear of light. It is common with migraine, eye inflammation and injury, and some infections, and it is one of the classic findings in meningitis. Some drugs, such as those that widen the pupils, can cause it too.
For the nurse
Dim the room lights, close the blinds and offer sunglasses. Report new light sensitivity that comes with a stiff neck, fever or severe headache right away.
