potassium iodide

An iodine salt taken by mouth that shuts down the thyroid's hormone release and blocks radioactive iodine.

puh-TAS-ee-um EYE-oh-dide noun

What it means

High doses of iodide quickly slow the thyroid. It is given for a short time before thyroid surgery to make the gland smaller and less bloody, and in thyroid storm. In a nuclear emergency, it fills the thyroid with safe iodine so radioactive iodine is not taken up. Lugol's solution (strong iodine solution) is a related product.

For the nurse

Mix the liquid in juice or milk and have the client drink through a straw, because it can stain teeth. Ask about any past reaction to iodine products, and report a metallic taste, burning mouth or rash.
