What it means
Rupture of the membranes before contractions begin, also called prelabor rupture of membranes (PROM). When it happens before 37 weeks it is preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM). The longer the time between rupture and birth, the greater the risk of infection for the mother and baby; cord prolapse is another risk.
For the nurse
Check the fetal heart rate right after rupture, and note the time, the color, amount and smell of the fluid. Check the client's temperature regularly and limit vaginal exams.
