What it means

As people get older, usually starting in their 40s, the lens of the eye becomes stiffer and cannot change shape as easily (accommodationuh-kom-uh-DAY-shunThe eye's ability to change its focus from distant objects to near ones.Full entry ). Reading small print becomes harder, and people hold things farther away to see them. Reading glasses, bifocals or contact lenses correct it.

For the nurse

Make sure older clients have their glasses on before teaching or giving written instructions, and use large print.
