prescribe

To order a medicine or treatment for a person, as a licensed health care provider.

prih-SKRYBE verb

What it means

Writing or entering an order for a drug, test or therapy. Who may prescribe is set by law: physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, dentists and some others, within their scope. The person who writes the order is the prescriber. Registered nurses do not prescribe, but they check orders and must question any that are unclear or unsafe.

For the nurse

Before giving a drug, check that the order is complete: client name, drug, dose, route, time or frequency, and the prescriber's signature. Clarify with the prescriber any order you think is wrong.
