Word parts

pro- beforegnosis knowledge

What it means

The provider's best forecast of how an illness will go, based on the type and stage of the disease, the client's health and how they respond to treatment. A good prognosis means recovery is likely; a poor prognosis means it is not. It is a forecast, not a certainty.

For the nurse

The provider explains the prognosis; the nurse checks what the client and family understood, answers questions within the nurse's role, and supports them in making decisions.
