Word parts
What it means
The prostate becomes swollen and tender. Acute bacterial prostatitis comes on quickly and needs antibiotics. Chronic forms last for months and may or may not involve infection; chronic pelvic pain syndrome is the most common type and has no clear cause.
For the nurse
Teach the client to take the whole course of antibiotics, drink plenty of fluids, and use warm sitz baths for comfort; report fever, chills or trouble passing urine.
