RCT

Randomized controlled trial: a study in which people are assigned by chance to a treatment group or a comparison group.

ar-see-tee (said as letters) abbreviation

What it means

A research design that is the strongest single study for testing whether a treatment works. Random assignment makes the groups alike, so differences in outcome are likely due to the treatment. In the hierarchy of evidence, only systematic reviews and meta-analyses of several RCTs rank higher.
