Word parts
What it means
Swelling of the inside of the nose, with a runny or stuffy nose, sneezing and itching. Allergic rhinitis (hay fever) is caused by allergens such as pollen, dust mites or pet dander. Infectious rhinitis is usually the common cold. Some cases come from irritants or from overusing decongestant nose sprays.
For the nurse
Teach clients with allergies to avoid triggers where they can. Decongestant nose sprays should not be used for more than about 3 days, or the stuffiness can come back worse.
