What it means
A sac behind the penis that holds the two testes outside the body, where it is slightly cooler, which sperm production needs. Muscles in its wall draw the testes closer to the body when cold and let them hang lower when warm. Swelling of the scrotum can come from fluid (hydrocele), swollen veins (varicocele), a hernia, infection or a twisted testicle.
For the nurse
Sudden, severe pain and swelling of the scrotum, often with nausea, can be testicular torsion and needs surgery within hours: report it at once. Teach monthly testicular self-exams. After surgery in the area, support and raise the scrotum and apply cold as ordered.
