separation anxiety

Fear and distress that a young child shows when separated from a parent or main caregiver.

sep-uh-RAY-shun ang-ZY-uh-tee noun

What it means

A normal stage of development that usually begins at about 6 to 8 months, is strongest in toddlers and fades by about age 3. A hospitalized toddler may go through three stages: protest (crying, clinging), despair (quiet, withdrawn) and detachment (seeming not to care). When the fear is far stronger than expected for the child's age and gets in the way of daily life, it may be separation anxiety disorder.

For the nurse

Encourage parents to stay and help with care, keep routines from home, and bring a favorite toy or blanket. Teach parents to say goodbye and tell the child when they will return, rather than sneaking away.
