serous

Thin, watery and clear to pale yellow, like the fluid part of blood.

SEER-us adjective

What it means

Used mostly to describe wound drainage. Serous drainage is clear and watery, serosanguineous is pink and watery (serum mixed with a little blood), sanguineous is bloody, and purulent is thick pus. Serous membranes are thin linings, such as the pleura and pericardium, that make a small amount of slippery fluid.

For the nurse

Chart the type, color, amount and smell of wound drainage. A change from serous to purulent or a bad smell can mean infection.

In a chart

"Small amount of serous drainage on the dressing; no odor."
